<idPurp>Wildfire Ignition Density is the likelihood of a wildfire igniting in an area used to aid in planning activities.</idPurp>

Occurrence is derived by modeling historic wildfire ignition locations to create an average ignition rate map. The ignition rate is measured in the number of fires per year per 1000 acres. Six years of historic fire report data was used to create the ignition points for all southern fires. For all Southern states except Texas and Florida, data was obtained from federal, state and local fire department report data sources for the years 1997 to 2002. The Wildfire Ignition Density for these states is the Fire Occurrence Areas output from the original Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment. This data was not updated as part of the recent south wide risk update project. In Florida, additional fire data was obtained for state fires for the years 1981 to 2007. The compiled wildfire occurrence database was cleaned to remove duplicate records and to correct inaccurate locations. The database was then modeled to create a density map reflecting historical fire ignition rates. To aid in the use of Wildfire Ignition Density for planning activities, the output values are categorized into seven (7) classes reflecting average ignition rates. These are given general descriptions from Very Low to Very High. Seven classes are used to present finer detail for mapping purposes so that transitional areas can be easily identified. The class breaks are determined by analyzing the output values to reflect for the entire region.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>
